![]() Ocean Futures and the International Polar Year (IPY) 20072008 Organized by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the International Polar Year (IPY) 20072008 is the most significant marshalling under one scientific umbrella of research on Polar matters for a long time. Ocean Futures submitted a project entitled 'Norwegian and Russian Arctic Resources: Prospects for Economic and Social Development, ARD for short, for approval as an official IPY activity. ARD seeks to give a comprehensive account of all onshore and offshore biological and mineral resources, including oil and gas, in the northern and Arctic parts of Norway and Russia from northern Norway and the Kola Peninsula in the west to the Bering Strait in the east. The project is a collaborative undertaking between Ocean Futures and three of Russia's leading scientific institutions (see description of ARD). Ocean Futures and its three collaborators are very pleased to have been informed by the IPY Joint Committee that it 'considers that your proposal as submitted includes very strong scientific, education and outreach components and demonstrates a high level of adherence to IPY themes and goals. The Joint Committee therefore endorses your proposal as a prominent and valued part of the IPY program'. (Letter of 15. March 2006). See also Proposed IPY Activity Details. Updated: 24 April 2006 |
